Naruto is one of the most influential shonen manga and anime series in history, created by Masashi Kishimoto and serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump from 1999 to 2014. The manga spans 72 volumes and has sold over 250 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling manga series of all time. The anime adaptation, produced by Studio Pierrot, aired from 2002 to 2017 across two series -- the original Naruto (220 episodes) and Naruto Shippuden (500 episodes) -- and has been broadcast in over 80 countries. The franchise continues with Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, following the next generation of ninja, alongside light novels, films, video games, and a massive global merchandise empire.
The story follows Naruto Uzumaki, a young ninja from the Hidden Leaf Village (Konohagakure) who dreams of becoming Hokage, the village's leader and strongest ninja. Orphaned at birth and shunned by his village for harboring the Nine-Tailed Fox (Kurama) sealed within him, Naruto's journey from outcast to hero is the emotional core of the series. His growth is defined by his relationships: his rivalry and friendship with Sasuke Uchiha, the last survivor of the massacred Uchiha clan who seeks revenge against his brother Itachi; his mentorship under Kakashi Hatake, the copy ninja with the Sharingan eye; and his bond with Jiraiya, the legendary Toad Sage who becomes his father figure. The series builds from mission-based arcs in the original series to an epic war saga in Shippuden, culminating in the Fourth Great Ninja War where the entire shinobi world unites against a common enemy.
The power system of Naruto is one of the most detailed in anime. Chakra is the life energy that fuels all jutsu techniques, created by combining physical energy (from the body's cells) and spiritual energy (from training and experience). Jutsu are divided into three main categories: ninjutsu (techniques using chakra to create effects, from the Shadow Clone and Rasengan to elemental attacks), genjutsu (illusion techniques that manipulate the target's senses, most famously used by the Uchiha clan through their Sharingan), and taijutsu (hand-to-hand combat, exemplified by Rock Lee and Might Guy). Beyond these basics, the system includes nature transformations (Fire, Wind, Lightning, Earth, Water, plus the advanced Yin, Yang, and Yin-Yang releases), Kekkei Genkai (bloodline abilities like the Sharingan, Byakugan, Wood Release, and Ice Release), senjutsu (sage techniques that draw natural energy), kinjutsu (forbidden techniques), fuinjutsu (sealing techniques), and dojutsu (eye techniques).
The Naruto world is organized around the hidden villages of the Five Great Shinobi Nations. Konohagakure (Hidden Leaf) in the Land of Fire is the primary setting, home to the Uchiha, Hyuga, Nara, Akimichi, Yamanaka, Aburame, and Inuzuka clans. Sunagakure (Hidden Sand) in the Land of Wind is home to Gaara and the puppet masters. Kirigakure (Hidden Mist) in the Land of Water produced the Seven Ninja Swordsmen including Zabuza and Kisame. Kumogakure (Hidden Cloud) in the Land of Lightning is known for its swordsmen and the Eight-Tails jinchuriki Killer B. Iwagakure (Hidden Stone) in the Land of Earth produced the Third Tsuchikage Onoki and the explosion-style users. The Tailed Beasts, nine colossal chakra entities from the One-Tail Shukaku to the Nine-Tails Kurama, play a central role in the world's history, with jinchuriki (human hosts) serving as living weapons for their villages.
The villains of Naruto are among the most memorable in shonen. The Akatsuki, a criminal organization of S-rank rogue ninja, serves as the primary antagonist group through much of Shippuden. Led initially by Pain (Nagato) and later manipulated by Obito Uchiha, their members include Itachi Uchiha, Kisame Hoshigaki, Deidara, Sasori, Hidan, Kakuzu, and Konan. The true mastermind is revealed to be Madara Uchiha, the legendary co-founder of Konoha who survived death and orchestrated centuries of conflict to execute the Moon's Eye Plan. Behind even Madara is Kaguya Otsutsuki, the progenitor of chakra who descended from the stars. This layered antagonist structure creates a narrative where the scope of conflict steadily expands from personal rivalries to battles that determine the fate of the entire world.
