While the Hokage fights his final battle, Naruto and Sasuke pursue Gaara, who has fled the village after Shukaku's control began to overwhelm him. What follows is a chase that takes them far from the burning village, into a forest where Gaara's complete transformation into the One-Tailed Shukaku forces Naruto and Sasuke to confront their own inner demons. Sasuke, freshly awakened to his Curse Mark's power, uses Chidori for the first time in combat but finds Gaara's sand defense still too strong.
Naruto's fight against Gaara is more than a battle of techniques—it is a confrontation between two jinchuriki with diametrically opposite responses to their isolation. Gaara became a sociopath who found meaning only in killing; Naruto became a prankster who desperately sought acknowledgment.
